Getting a flat tire is one of the most common — and annoying — issues cyclists face. Whether you're commuting, out on a training ride, or exploring the backroads around Jávea, a puncture can ruin your plans. But with a little know-how, fixing a flat is quick and easy. Here's how to do it.
What You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have these tools:
-
Tire levers (2 recommended)
-
Spare tube or patch kit
-
Bicycle pump or CO₂ inflator
-
Optional: multitool (for removing wheels on some bikes)
Step 1: Remove the Wheel
Shift your chain to the smallest gear (rear) or smallest chainring (front) if possible. Open your quick-release or thru-axle and carefully remove the wheel from the bike.
Step 2: Take Out the Tube
Use tire levers to gently pry the tire off the rim. Start on the side opposite the valve. Once one side of the tire is off, pull out the inner tube. Don’t forget to remove the valve from the rim.
Step 3: Find the Cause
Run your fingers slowly along the inside of the tire. Look for sharp objects like glass, thorns, or metal shards. Carefully remove anything you find. If you skip this step, you might get another flat right away.
Step 4: Patch or Replace the Tube
If you’re using a patch kit, roughen the hole with sandpaper, apply glue, and stick on the patch. Wait a few minutes until it’s dry. For faster results, simply insert a new tube.
Step 5: Install the Tube
Inflate the tube slightly — just enough to give it shape. Insert the valve into the rim hole and tuck the tube into the tire. Use your hands (not levers) to push the tire back onto the rim, being careful not to pinch the tube.
Step 6: Inflate and Check
Pump up the tire to the recommended pressure (printed on the sidewall). Check that the tire is seated evenly and spins freely. Reinstall the wheel on your bike and secure it properly.
Pro Tips
-
Always carry a spare tube and pump when riding

If you get frequent flats, check your tire condition or consider puncture-resistant models
