Why this Costa Blanca stage is special

5,200metres of climbing

The Costa Blanca is famous for sunny coastal roads, but the landscape changes quickly inland. Short, steep climbs, exposed mountain sections and almost no flat recovery can make a long day much harder than the distance suggests.

Stage 9 showcases that contrast on international television: from sea level to a summit finish in the Sierra de Aitana. El Miserat and Puerto de Tudons are among the major tests before the final ascent.

  • Six classified mountain passes
  • More climbing than a typical Grand Tour mountain stage
  • Expected late-August heat and exposed roads
  • A summit finish before the first rest day

Spectator guide

Planning to watch from Jávea?

Choose one viewing location and arrive early. Following the race by car is rarely practical after closures begin, especially on narrow mountain roads.

01

Leave early

Roads on and around the route may close well before the peloton arrives.

02

Pick one location

Parcent, Orba and Pego are the closest published sections to Jávea. Villajoyosa offers the Grand Tour start atmosphere.

03

Park responsibly

Never block the course, emergency access, junctions or residents’ driveways.

04

Prepare for heat

Carry plenty of water, sun protection and a hat. Many mountain viewing areas offer very little shade.

05

Expect a wait

The race convoy passes before the riders, and roads may take time to reopen afterwards.

06

Respect the race

Stay behind barriers, control animals and never step into the road for a photo.

Ride smart

Inspired to ride the Costa Blanca mountains?

The professional route is extreme and should not be treated as a normal sightseeing ride. For your own day in the hills, choose a shorter route that matches your fitness, start early and carry enough water, food, tools and navigation.

Before a long mountain ride, check tyre condition and pressure, brake pads, gear shifting, chain wear and essential bolts. Fast descents, summer heat and remote roads deserve as much attention as the climbs. Read our guide to bike care in the Costa Blanca climate.
